Tsar Nicholas II Coronation

Scenes from the coronation of Russia’s last Tsar Nicholas II in May 1896; this is one of the oldest filmed moving images in existence, and one of the first examples of a significant news event being filmed to be shown to audiences worldwide.

The Queen as Mechanic

The Queen as a Mechanic (1945) [Full Resolution]. “Princess Mechanic – Princess Elizabeth Does Her Bit To Aid The War Effort”. Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) 2nd Subaltern is seen taking a driving course. Her parents, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth (later Queen Mother) and her sister Princess Margaret come to visit Elizabeth and admire her handywork.

The Assassination of Alexander I of Yugoslavia

The newsreel footage showing the assassination of the Yugoslavian king Alexander in 1934 by Vlado Chernozemski from the Bulgarian VMRO in cooperation with the Croatian Ustasha, executed after VMRO issued a death sentence for the king as a punishment for his atrocities against the Bulgarian population in Macedonia and against the other supressed nationalities in Yugoslavia.

Spain’s Alfonso XIII Goes Into Exile

A 1930’s Pathe newsreel depicting the jubilant crowds flush with their victory following the Spanish Revolution. Also featured is Spain’s King Alfonso XIII as he goes into exile.

The 1901 Funeral Procession of Queen Victoria

A more sombre but still interesting though very short silent film. It’s more interesting I think for the fact that King and Kaiser are united in grief, but not for that much longer after that.

George V

George V was the first British sovereign belonging to the House of Windsor, which he created from the British branch of the German House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. He was King of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth countries as well as the Emperor of India and the first King of the Irish Free State. George reigned through World War I.
