The Remorse and Grief
that Follows an Abortion

This is the story of a young married woman named Agnes. In the Spring of 1957, much to her husband’s inconvenience, Agnes became pregnant and allowed her husband to decide that an abortion was in order. It seemed odd to her that such a weighty concern was not seriously discussed by the two of them, but Agnes was a dutiful wife and sensitive to her husband’s needs. Before she had time to collect her thoughts, she was in a taxi and on her way to the secret lair of the abortionist, where the whole matter was quickly concluded.

In the months that followed Agnes finally recognized the sort of fellow she had married and condemned herself in the harshest terms for failing to fully embrace the gravity of their situation:

“It was a great psychological and spiritual emptiness – as though she’d lost something of immense meaning that could never be replaced. Part of her womanhood, her reason for being alive, had been taken from her, and she felt a vast sense of deprivation.”

“I had degraded myself and betrayed my baby…”
