U.S. Army Lieut. General Edward M. Almond (1892 – 1979) was an old hand in Korea – he had commanded the Tenth Corps at Inchon, and later fought his way up to the Yalu River. In 1954 he found himself before the bright lights of a senate committee explaining what went wrong in Korea:

“Our lines held in spite of the restrictions and limitations imposed by our own Government, and our casualty rates were enormous.”
