This article is from the earliest days of the American participation in the war, and it anticipated the significance of the industrial city of Detroit – home to numerous automobile plants. When the American auto industry made the necessary steps to retool, and position themselves onto a wartime footing they managed to produce 88,410 tanks and self-propelled guns, 2.6 million machine guns, 42 billion rounds of ammunition, and 2.4 million trucks.
