The United States Committee for the Care of European Children was a semi-governmental American institution hastily created during the Summer of 1940 intent on saving primarily Jewish refugee children from war-torn Europe. It also worked hand-in-glove with CORB (The Children’s Overseas Reception Board), a British government-sponsored organization for the evacuation of British children to English-speaking nations. The Canadians and Americans proved to be quite enthusiastic in welcoming these children into their homes. Although ten thousand American households stepped up to the plate, CORB only managed to evacuate 2,664 youths.
“The children are to be here for the duration of the emergency and that may mean a long time after the last bomb has fallen,”
