To be sure, the anonymous scribe who made this effort to define the Left and Right in American politics was a Democrat, it can so easily be discerned by reading the definition that he applied to “conservatives” – which was so pithy it barely deserves comment (it was as if he was asked to simply describe the fuddy-duddy next door); by contrast he positively had to restrain himself from writing in iambic pentameter when it came to describing liberals – so essential was his wish to get the right superlatives (but then the article is titled, “What is a Liberal”). Fully intact in his definition was the Democrat’s pursuit of equality, although in the fullness of time it seems clear that today’s Democratic Party is far more keen on “equality of outcome” rather than equality of opportunity. The author stated his conviction that to be a liberal “one must be devoted to liberty”, yet that, too, has shifted with the sands: Obamacare has shown that the American liberal will only now defend sexual liberty, leaving the preservation of religious freedom to the Republicans.
The clipping posted above first appeared during the war years and thoroughly explains the philosophical distance that the Democratic party has traveled since the Forties. That leftist lens that the Communists have always used to see history has finally been adopted by the Democratic Party – like the Reds of old, they too filter all historic events through class and race (and now gender). Sadly, many within the party have come to openly reject free and open markets (ie. Capitalism) and there is a battle in the Democratic party to see which side will dominate.
