Alger Hiss

This article concerned how the Hiss/Chambers perjury trial was playing out before the jury during the Summer of 1949. The journalist pointed out that Hiss’ attorney, Lloyd Paul Stryker (whose services were financed by Richard Hinckley Field, see below), was constantly slandering the character and mental competency of Whitaker Chambers – an indication that the facts of the case were simply not on Hiss’ side. The guilt of Alger Hiss would become clear in 1990, when the Soviet Archives were opened: Hiss was a spy for the Soviet Army (not the NKVD as had been alleged); his code name was “Ales”
