Flappers

Enlightened by
My Daughters

• American Magazine, 1927 •

“MY DAUGHTERS are opening my eyes” says Mr. Saunders. “I am determined that the ancient rule that ‘children shall be seen and not be heard’ shall not hold in my house. When I have what I consider cause to criticize my children, or give them a command, I frankly tell them that I may be wrong; but they must show me wherein I am wrong. I invite them to talk back, to be fearlessly candid with me, to state their case and defend it. Then we understand each other. Many times they force me to abandon an untenable position. They do not think less of me for that, and there is no sullen resentment, no secret bitterness, no veiled spirit of determination to thwart me behind my back when I win over them.”
