In February, Lincoln expanded the draft and enlisted 500,000 more men. In March, Grant took charge of the Federal Army, and Lincoln called for 200,000 volunteers. In August, Admiral Farragut was victorious at Mobile Bay and the year ended with the city of Savannah, Georgia, being occupied by General Sherman’s troops.
