Face Masks Used
to Prevent the
Spread of the Virus

The terrible influenza pandemic of 1918 took a large chunk out of the American Army, both at home and abroad. The military and civilian medical authorities were at a loss as to what actions should be taken to prevent the spread of the disease, and as they paused to plan, thousands died. This article describes one step that proved successful, in the short term. Keep in mind that The Stars & Stripes was a U.S. Army newspaper operating under wartime conditions with heavy censorship; it is likely that the two deaths described in this article were indeed due to Influenza.
