The attached article stood in stark contrast to hundreds of other columns that had previously reported in the Allied papers how regretful the Germans were for having started the war and how economic privations were making them even more regretful with each passing day. Writing from Switzerland, this unnamed journalist insisted that the German home front of 1916 was composed of a proud and determined people who were fully prepared to see the war through to victory:

“The public generally is prepared for the possibility of another winter of war. Almost any German now says, in reply to a question as to how long he thinks that the war will last, ‘I am afraid that we shall have to stand another winter.’ What sustains the ordinary public is the constant assurance that, however hard life may be, all the difficulties are only temporary…”
