Duke of Windsor

His Annual Allowance

• Pathfinder Magazine, 1937 •

This article is about a meeting that the Duke had with his sister, Princess Mary (1897 – 1965) in Vienna two months after his abdication:

“Purpose of the Princess Royal’s visit, withheld officially, was reported to be to discuss with the Duke his future financial position, his prospective marriage to Wallis Warfield Simpson, and the sale of Sandringham, Edward’s country estate in England.”

It was rumored that her true assignment was to persuade him not to marry “that woman”. Although it is not mentioned in the article, it has been said that he agreed to the sum of £25,000 per annum (an agreement he very soon regretted).

“Whether Edward gets his ‘pension’ or not, he still holds one financial ace in the hole. The ownership of Sandringham.”
