On May 6, 1942, U.S. Lieutenant General Jonathan Wainwright (1883 – 1953) surrendered all American forces in the Philippines, including the garrison on Corregidor, to Japanese General Masaharu Homma (1887 – 1946), marking the end of America’s six-month defense of that island nation.
