On the opposite side of the field, Picket’s men faced 27 Union regiments:
9 New York regiments, 5 Pennsylvania regiments, one Michigan regiment, 1 Minnesota regiment, 1 New Jersey regiment, 1 Connecticut regiment, 1 Ohio regiment, 1 Delaware regiment, 1 Maine regiment and 3 regiments from Massachusetts and 3 regiments from Vermont – a total of 9,000 to 10,000 men”
