As editor-in-chief of Liberty Magazine, Bernarr Macfadden (1868 – 1955) asked an important question in this column:
“What is the matter with this country? Why is it we are credited with being the last to recover from the world-wide Depression? As the wealthiest nation in the world, we should have been the first?”
Mcfadden held that the New Deal bureaucrats were not merely economic bunglers, but had taken advantage of the fact that the American people were largely ignorant of their constitution (specifically
Section One of the Fourteenth Amendment) and were often assuming more power than they actually had.
The editors at New Masses were not impressed with Macfadden, and said as much in this article.
