Benito Mussolini

1936 Armistice Day in
Fascist Italy

• American Legion Monthly, 1936 •

Dispatched to Italy during the sunnier days of Italian Fascism, this reporter, John R. Tunis (1889 – 1975) writing for “The American Legion Monthly”, was charged with the task of chronicling the 1936 Armistice Day celebration as it was observed in Mussolini’s Rome. Tunnis was disgusted to note that the Italians seemed to learn nothing from World War I – Mussolini’s Armistice celebration was drenched in fascist pageantry and the attending masses had a far greater interest in their current military exploits in far-off Africa than remembering their sons and fathers who had perished just eighteen years earlier.
