Writing in 1945, Journalist Amy Porter made the point that the general health of Americans was, on the whole, not good and that some form of government intervention should be welcomed:
"A survey by the National Opinion Research Center (paid for by a group that is in favor of the bill) found that 68 percent favored a broadened Social Security law covering payment for doctor and hospital care, and 82 percent wanted an easier way of paying medical bills. Another survey by the Opinion Research Corporation (paid for by a group opposed to the bill) showing 37 percent favoring a 'federal government plan' for health security, although 63 percent wanted some easier way of paying medical costs."
