When this article went to press the Nazis had quit the war and all eyes turned to the Pacific Theater wondering as to when that enemy would also be forced off the field.

The Americans were in Japan's front yard, holding securely to the Japanese islands of Okinawa and Iwo Jima while bombing Tokyo around the clock. With no foreknowledge whatever that the end was near (as a result of the Manhattan Project), the writer of this Yank Magazine article anticipated a long, drawn-out slug fest lasting at least a year before the Japanese war effort would grind to a halt.

"The higher brass around the Pentagon says that three major factors, none of them predictable at this stage of the game, will decide whether it will take 1 year, 2 years or longer to win the far East war.

• How long will it take to redeploy to the Pacific the Stateside and ETO soldiers who are slated for the Jap war?

• How much more punishment will the Japs take before surrendering?

• Will Russia enter the war?"
