The heroes Clark Gable portrayed on screen were characters who displayed not simply gallantry but were endowed with a deep respect for the universal virtues that are admired globally, such as generosity, forgiveness, compassion, and loyalty. He played the parts well and as a result he was richly rewarded. Yet, to read this article is to understand how far removed Gable was from these characters, and how creative the Hollywood casting agents had been in choosing him for those rolls. The virtue Gable seemed unable to find within himself was gratitude.

We like to think that he was a wee bit nicer to his four other wives.
