This magazine article tells of the experience lived by former German P.O.W. General Walter Schreiber (1893 – 1970) who eluded his Soviet jailers in 1946 and slipped away into the American Zone where he reported on the unrelenting barrage of Soviet propaganda that the Russians served-up daily to the German P.O.W.s who fought at Stalingrad:
"If communism provides the Utopia that Marx, Lenin and Stalin claim, why does Russia have to rule by the bayonet?... Schreiber stated that for six years the Russians worked to convert the 2,500 German officers to communism, with the intention of returning them to Germany in key posts to further the spread of communism in their native land."
Of this 2,500, 23 were believed to have taken the bate.
