Gertrude Stein, witness to both World Wars, believed that the there were many differences between the W.W. I American Doughboy and their W.W. II counterparts, but the primary differences was the absence of Bibles. The American Bible Society soon wrote to Newsweek to inform the readers that they had lavished the U.S. Military with as many as 8,000,000 Bibles - this was on top of the New Testaments that were already issued to all service personnel upon induction.
