Fed-up with decades of articles and editorials declaring that he and his Confederate comrades fought tirelessly in order to preserve and advance the cause of slavery, elderly Southern veteran James Callaway put pen to paper in order explain that this was not the case. Callaway likens the Confederate soldiers to the patriots of 1776 who fought the British - for both embraced liberty yet held Black people in bondage. The author couldn't help but stray from his main point to argue that the U.S. Constitution provided for the protection of slavery - and equipped with passages from that document that defend property rights and an artificial Lincoln quote, further argued that even IF some Southerners did fight for slavery they would have been fully justified.
