On the right you'll find a page from a 1956 R.O.T.C. manual concerning American Military History outlining the events of 1948 and the geo-political Cold-War climate that created the need for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The existence of this military alliance, as its foundational treaty stated,
"to safeguard the freedom, common heritage and civilization of peoples, founded on the principles of democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law."
