The Soviet-approved painting above depicted a life that the average Russian citizen under Stalin could only dream about. What you don't see are the vodka flasks in each of their pockets, the two other families with whom this group was forced to abide or the fact that the apartment had no hot water heater. The article tells the story of what Soviet life was truly like and it was written at a time when rationing in America had ended and the military was winding down. Rationing in the Soviet Union never ended anymore than military conscription. Life under communism was difficult, and all of this was confirmed by the Russian refugees who migrated to the West when the Wall came down.
