The Battle
of Leyte Gulf

On the right is the first half of the thrilling account of the Battle of Leyte Gulf (October 23 - 26, 1944) as it appeared in two installments in Collier's Magazine in January, 1945.

"Everything went by the book. First the fighters would strafe the ships, then the the dive bombers would drop their loads, and they were immediately followed by the torpedo planes. Huge columns of smoke came from the burning ships, and the water was filled with Japs. One carrier was sinking, and you could see that other ships were really hurt. The Nip destroyer never bothered to pick up survivors as far as I could see."
