Written in 1921 by both George Jean Nathan and H.L. Mencken (pictured above) is one of their reoccurring editorials from a 1921 issue of The Smart Set. This slender column cataloged the damage done by the “guardians of the national virtue” and their bastard offspring, Prohibition and the Volstead Act, which will primarily serve to promote the wide (though illegal) distribution of all the poorest distilled spirits concocted in the most “remote frontiers of civilization”.
