If you feel slightly ashamed for not knowing why American soldiers were called Doughboy during the First World War, don't - because a lot of the Doughboys themselves didn't know either. One of them wrote to the editors at The Stars & Stripes to find out - here is the official explanation offered by the old salts at the paper.
